ENVIRONMENT

Land as rare as any patch of the Amazon rainforest

Gomde UK is set on the Lindholme Hall Estate — 180 acres of rare and ecologically rich land within the Humberhead Levels National Nature Reserve. More than a beautiful setting, this unique landscape serves as a living classroom, reminding us of our place within the natural world. Guided by Buddhist values that teach us nothing is permanent, that every form of life matters, and that compassion begins with how we live, we care for the land and its finite resources as both a responsibility and a reflection of our practice. In close partnership with local ecologists, scientists, and environmentalists, including the Lindholme Old Moor Management Group, we combine ancient wisdom with modern science to protect biodiversity, restore vital peatlands, and help safeguard this fragile ecosystem for future generations.

Nature & Surroundings

Gomde UK sits on Lindholme Hall Estate, a peaceful and remote ‘island’ surrounded by the vast peatlands of Hatfield Moor. Once reachable only by boat and now connected to the nearest village by a three-mile single-track road, the land’s natural beauty and seclusion evoke wonderment and a sense of being ‘at home’—a place of connection and natural refuge. Lindholme Island, together with the surrounding Hatfield Moor, is one of the ten most biodiverse sites in England. Given the rarity of this landscape and its significance in the fight against climate change, conservation and environmental action have become cornerstones of our work.

Environmental Action

Gomde UK is actively engaged in environmental initiatives, such as the Mire Emergency Project, which aims to restore carbon-sequestering bogs and support local biodiversity. These efforts reflect our commitment to addressing climate change while practicing Buddhist principles of care and interconnection.

Workshops & Volunteering

We offer a range of open and organised group environmental workshops throughout the year, often led by our specialist team of ecologists - the LOMM Group. We also have plenty of opportunities to actively participate in our range of activities from restoring the peatlands to looking after our organic gardens.
